सर महादेव भास्कर चौबळ

चौबळ यांनी १८८३ पासून वकिलीचा स्वतंत्र व्यवसाय सुरु केला. सुमारे २५ वर्षे हायकोर्टात नामांकित वकील असा नावलौकिक मिळवला. पुढे १९०६ मधे सरकारी वकील म्हणून त्यांची नियुक्ती झाली. हंगामी न्यायाधीश म्हणून त्यांची नेमणूक झाली असताना, त्यांनी हिंदू कायद्यासंबंधी दिलेले काही निर्णय, हे नामनिर्देश करण्याइतपत प्रमाणभूत ठरले. ह्याची परिणीती मुंबई गव्हर्नरच्या एक्झेक्युटिव्ह कौन्सिलचे पहिले भारतीय सदस्य ह्या सन्माननीय पदात झाली.

१९१२ साली गव्हर्नरच्या एक्झेक्युटिव्ह कौन्सिलमधे असताना, ब्रिटिश पार्लमेंटमधे भारतीय वंशाच्या लोकांना नोकऱ्या देण्यासाठी "रॉयल पब्लिक सर्विसेस कमिशन" या आयोगावर चौबळांची नियुक्ती झाली. त्यावेळेस त्यांच्या कामाचा गौरव म्हणून "नाईट" हा बहुमानाचा खिताब देऊन त्यांना "सर" ही उपाधी मिळाली.

सेवानिवृत्तीनंतर सर चौबळांनी सामाजिक कार्यात सक्रिय भाग घेतला. पुण्याच्या डेक्कन एज्युकेशन सोसायटीच्या नियामक मंडळाचे अध्यक्षपद काही काळ भूषवले. पुण्यातील अनेक स्त्री-शिक्षण संस्थांशी यांचा निकटचा संबंध होता. ते हुजूरपागा या मुलींच्या शाळेच्या नियामक मंडळाचे अध्यक्ष होते. १९२० साली महर्षी कर्वे यांच्या "इंडियन विमेन्स युनिव्हर्सिटी" चे ते कुलगुरू होते.

Started independent practice as a lawyer from 1883. He has been a renowned lawyer in the High Court for about 25 years. Later in 1906 he was appointed as Public Prosecutor. When he was appointed as the interim judge, some of the decisions he made on Hindu law, resulted in him becoming the first Indian to hold the honorary post of the Mumbai Governor's Executive Council.

In 1912, while on the Governor's Executive Council, Chaubal was appointed to the "Royal Public Service Commission" in the British Parliament to provide jobs to people of Indian descent. At that time, in recognition of his work, he was honoured with "Knighthood" and was awarded the title of "Sir".

After his retirement, Sir Chaubal took an active part in social work. He was the Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Deccan Education Society, Pune for some time. He had close ties with many women's education institutes in Pune. He was the Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Girls' School, Huzurpaga. Also, he was the Vice-Chancellor of Maharshi Karve's "Indian Women's University" in 1920.
